Your rights during police encounter
1. Be treated with respect
2. To request the officer’s name and badge number
3. To remain silent during questioning and refuse to give consent for a search
4. Be free from unnecessary force
5. Be free from unnecessary detentions, searches, arrests
6. To know why you are being stopped
7. To know charges against you
8. To file a complaint against the officer and expect an outcome
9. Miranda Warning – Miranda warnings can protect you from self-incrimination. Officers do
not have to read Miranda warnings during arrest unless they are questioning you about the
crime and you have been arrested.
